I found myself blinking back tears today when Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor walked on to the View set. The first Supreme Court Justice in the show’s history, the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court and third woman.
These minority advances are critical door-openers and emotional drum rolls for the nation, but historical firsts don’t pull the decision lever for me or have staying power.
Accomplishment and character do.
Anyone who has heard my position on quotas and affirmative action knows that I don’t believe in opportunity based solely on demographics. When I think about choosing a woman over a man who may be more qualified, in order to fill a quota, all I can think is how is this better than picking a man over a more qualified woman? Read more….
